artist statement

Ivan Riascos is a multidisciplinary artist who identifies himself as an anthropologist, visual sociologist, and diarist. He studies how imagery reflects and shapes interconnectedness, and combines this with personal, diaristic experiences to investigate how broader social forces influence an individual’s private life.

His art explores the “sublime,” challenging traditional vast landscapes, and instead bringing forth subtle yet overwhelming forces that shape human identity and connection. The latter version of the sublime encompasses themes of relationships, religion, gender, race, and class, as well as the feelings of flux and impermanence they evoke.

Once he develops a conceptual idea for his art project, he chooses the medium that best conveys his intentions and vision. This can include drawing, photography, video, sculpture, painting, and photomontage. Through introspective, sociological observations, he aims to evoke feelings of awe, wonder, and reflection on life’s deeper complexities, moving the viewer toward a shared understanding rather than a purely isolated, aesthetic experience.
